Zermatt and its railways

For railway enthusiasts, the anticipation starts to rise during the journey to Zermatt. Being a car-free resort, Zermatt can only be reached by train – specifically via Täsch on the Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway. The legendary Glacier Express from St. Moritz/Davos also runs to Zermatt. And who hasn’t dreamt of crossing the Swiss Alps in this iconic red-and-white train? Past snow-capped peaks, lush green meadows, over narrow gorges and through countless tunnels. A journey on the Glacier Express is a totally unique and memorable experience.

But that’s not all: the Gornergrat Railway (GGB) is another highlight. Next to the station of the Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway (MGB), this cogwheel line links Zermatt with the summit of the Gornergrat. Construction began in 1896, and the railway initially only operated during summer. In 1928, a year-round service commenced. The Gornergrat is a popular excursion destination offering stunning views of the Monte Rosa and that mountain of mountains, the Matterhorn.
